The International Federation of Translators (FIT) established in 1991 that September 30th would be the day to celebrate International Translation Day:
“Each year, translators, interpreters and terminologists celebrate International Translation Day on 30 September, the feast of St. Jerome. A unifying theme is chosen each year and a competition is held to design a poster for FIT members to print and use to promote the day and join together in celebrating our professions.”
How are you celebrating this day in 2020? To my own surprise, I am spending the day working from an airport today while I wait for my connecting flight. Little I knew 10 years ago when I first set foot in the Facultad de Traducción at the Universidad de Granada, that this profession would allow me to be here and there, to work from anywhere. We are all fortunate in this industry to have the advanced technology, flexibility and resources to be able to not only stay afloat, but also remain growing and, in words of our CEO Frank Wei, “ride the tide of Covid-19”. Let us all celebrate that!
I was personally deeply impressed at the beginning of this crisis by the groups of volunteer translators that emerged to help doctors communicate all around the world. Thank you, translators and interpreters, for “Finding the words for a world in crisis”. Your efforts are meaningful!! You are needed and appreciated!
